The Standup Comediennes

Synopsis

The film documents female standup comics in Israel. We encounter leading female comedians in their homes, as they work on their gigs and provide moving and amusing interviews on the hardships breaking into a world ruled predominantly by men. The documentation provides a touching and amusing portrayal of the unique world of female standup comics.

The protagonists, that include Israel’s leading and most seasoned comedienne Rivka Michaeli, who never dared go on stage without a written text, Orna Banai, Lital Schwartz, Hadar Levi and Tom Yaar, bring their personal stories center stage.

They talk openly about the source of their sense of humor, which is always linked to scathing traumas of the past. They convey the idiosyncrasy that made them turn the pain into humor, the price a woman pays when she becomes a standup star and what makes women laugh.
